All three land within about two inches of each other, and all three stop at or just below shoulder height for a 6'4" user. That is the whole story in one line: the backrest ends at the shoulder blades, and everything above the shoulder blades is cantilevered.

Steelcase Leap V2 Headrest Options

The Leap V2 has the largest gap of the three chairs: a backrest topping out around 23" above the seat against a 34" occiput target at 6'4". That is roughly eleven inches of unsupported spine, and it is why Leap owners search for headrests more than Aeron owners do.

There is no confirmed aftermarket headrest for the Steelcase Gesture on Amazon. I'm not going to route you to a substitute product to fill the space, because there isn't one I can verify.

Here is the actual situation. Steelcase offers a Gesture headrest, but only as a factory-configured option selected at the time of chair purchase. It mounts to a specific upper back assembly, and a Gesture ordered without that option does not have the structure to accept it later. This is not a bolt-on accessory — it's a different back build. If you bought a Gesture without the headrest, as I did, retrofitting through normal retail channels is not available.

The remaining options are both bad. Universal clamp-on headrests marketed as fitting "any office chair" exist, but their mounting straps and bar clamps are designed around flat-topped backrests, and the Gesture's upper back is a contoured shell. I have not tested one and will not recommend one on unverified fitment. The other option is behavioral: recline less, or add head support from outside the chair entirely.

How to Measure Whether You Need a Headrest

Four steps, one tape measure, and a helper. Do this before you spend $190.

  1. Set the chair to your correct seat height. Feet flat on the floor, thighs parallel or declining slightly. Measuring at the wrong seat height corrupts every number that follows.
  2. Measure the backrest top above the compressed seat surface. Sit in the chair so the cushion compresses, then measure straight up to the highest point of the backrest. Expect roughly 23" on a Leap V2, 22.5"–23" on a Gesture, 24"–25" on an Aeron Size C.
  3. Measure your seated occiput height. The occiput is the bony ridge at the base of the skull, about 5"–6" below the crown. Have someone measure from the seat pan up to it. Expect about 33" at 6'2", 34" at 6'4", 35" at 6'6".
  4. Subtract. Occiput height minus backrest top height equals the rise the headrest must deliver. Compare that against the product's published vertical travel plus its fixed mounting offset.
